The long-awaited sequel to an extremely popular Xbox Game Pass knock has finally arrived Monday morning with a shadow drop out of nowhere, and is now playable on Xbox and PC through both the Xbox PC app and Valve's PC gaming client Steam.
The crowd-pleaser in ask is Descenders — a 2019 downhill racing sports game that benefitted hugely from coming to Game Pass — and its newly released follow-up is Descenders Next, "a massive project" from developer RageSquid and publisher No More Robots. Previously, it was scheduled to come out on April 9 earlier this year, but was delayed indefinitely so changes based on playtest feedback could be made.
Notably, like the original game, Descenders Next has launched into Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview, with RageSquid planning to gradually update it into a complete "1.0" state over the next two years. The original Descenders won the hearts of extreme sports fans when it was released back in 2019. With a combination of procedurally generated tracks, a slick physics system, and a sense of breakneck speed, it became one of the best ways to experience mountain biking in gaming. Six years later, Descenders Next is ready to expand those horizons to the worlds of snowboarding and mountainboarding. On Monday, publisher No More Robots and developer RageSquid surprised Descenders fans by announcing that the Descenders sequel not only has an early access launch date ready, but that date is today.
Descenders Next follows many of the same principles as its predecessor, with the goal being to start from an elevated point and descend towards a goal. Whether it's at a decent speed or like a death-defying blur is up to you. The primary difference is that players can either go down snowy peaks with a snowboard or down grassier mountain peaks with a mountainboard. Over time, players can earn customization options for their rider and also discover different terrain over the course of a roguelike-style run.
