In late March, Ring, WBA and WBO strawweight boss Oscar Collazo travelled to Cancun, Mexico, to retain his cadre of titles and once again reaffirm his status as the premier fighter in boxing's smallest weight class.

On this occasion, Collazo easily beat Mexico's Edwin Cano, scoring a dominant fifth-round knockout.

"Well, I felt very good, Cano came well prepared, but with our IQ and strength, [we] managed to stop his attack with the bodyshots," Collazo (12-0, 9 knockouts) told The Ring through Bryan Perez of Miguel Cotto Promotions. "It was an honor fighting over there in Mexico. It was going to be a challenge for me. We went with a good plan, and it work out perfectly."

The win had added significance because it was the fifth successful defense of his WBO title that he won against Melvin Jerusalem (RTD 7) in May 2023.

"Since I became WBO champion, my goal was getting WBO ring, and being part of all the legends that also carry that privilege to be part of that selected group that's represents my home, my Puerto Rico organization," he said. "I have to give my gratitude to President Gustavo [Oliveri] and Paco Valcarcel to g

William Zepeda and Tevin Farmer are set to run it back, while Oscar Collazo is set for his first defense of The Ring strawweight championship.

Golden Boy Promotions confirmed that a deal was reached for the Zepeda-Farmer rematch to headline a March 29 DAZN show from an unspecified venue in Cancun, Mexico. The sequel will come barely four months after their Nov. 16 meeting, won by Zepeda via split decision in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“Back for more,” Golden Boy stated through its social media channels. “William Zepeda and Tevin Farmer ready to go toe-to-toe AGAIN on March 29 in Cancun, MX for the REMATCH and the WBC interim lightweight world championship.”

While not yet announced, The Ring has learned that Puerto Rico’s Collazo (11-0, 8 KOs) will defend his RING and unified WBA/WBO strawweight championship against Mexico’s Edward Cano Hernandez (13-2-1, 4 KOs).

Mexico’s Zepeda (32-0, 27 KOs), The Ring’s No. 4 lightweight, entered talks for a rematch against Farmer (33-7-1, 8 KOs) once he was unable to proceed with previous plans. The unbeaten southpaw was in line to next challenge WBC 135-pound titlist Shakur Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs), but an injury forced him out of their t

Oscar Collazo ends Thammanoon Niyomtrong's flawless record with vicious knockout victory

Oscar Collazo delivered another scintillating remark as he blasted past Thammanoon Niyomtrong to become WBO and WBA unified minimumweight champion on the undercard of Chris Billam-Smith's fight against Gilberto Ramirez on Saturday night.

The Ring Magazine champion unleashed a thumping right hang to floor his Thai opponent in a furious sixth orbicular, before sending Niyomtrong stumbling to the canvas again with another crashing right in the seventh.

He eventually sealed the deal in emphatic fashion as he landed a brutal left uppercut to finish a valiant but tiring Niyomtrong, who saw his unbeaten record come to an complete after the first defeat of his professional career to collapse to 25-1.

Niyomtrong, known by his ring name of Knockout CP Freshmart, had held the WBA title since beating Byron Rojas in June 2016.

Collazo meanwhile moves to 11-0 as a professional with his eighth knockout defeat, underlining why he is regarded so highly around the nature and exactly why he is expected to rise through the weights.
