Our latest drama obsession is Channel 4's newest thriller series The Couple Next Door, which tells the story of two couples living on the same street who become, "sexually entangled in a way that will change their lives forever".

The Couple Next Door stars Eleanor Tomlinson, Sam Heughan, Alfred Enoch and Jessica De Gouw and is based on a Dutch series of the same name. As the six episodes unfold things start to get seriously messy, with partner swaps, surprise pregnancies, a creepy stalker and a criminal sub-plot involving Danny (Sam Heughan).

The series ends with a tense chase through the woods and a major shoot-out. So what happens in the final episode to lead up to this shoot-out and who is responsible for the shooting? Here's the full ending of The Couple Next Door explained.

What happens in the final episode of The Couple Next Door?

The final episode of The Couple Next Door kicks off with Becka (Jessica De Gouw) confronting Danny at home about the child he fathered with Lena.

Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) heads home where she tells her parents

The episode opens with Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) and Danny (Sam Heughan) after having sex. She expresses her desire to do it again. He says they have partners to get back to before walking away. She appears to be disappointed by his behavior. Upon leaving, Danny sees a distressed Pete (Alfred Enoch) sitting in a chair. He returns home to find Becka (Jessica de Gouw) upset about their sex videos being posted online. She asks if he is responsible. Denying any responsibility, he vows to find the culprit.

Lying on a gurney, Alan Richardson (Hugh Dennis) is being placed in an ambulance. Jean Richardson (Kate Robbins) tells the paramedic (Emma Moortgat) that Alan was looking for a possible intruder. The paramedic says Alan appears to have suffered a stroke. Gloria (Janine Duvitski) and Ruffles watch as Jean gets into the ambulance with Alan.

Danny spots an unusual car in the neighborhood. Evie invites Pete out to the pub. He suggests she is going to act like everything is normal. She assures him that Becka is okay with her and Danny. She urges him to not blame himself.

The Couple Next Door is a psychological drama all about two couples and their increasingly entangled lives. Pete (Alfred Enoch) and Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) quickly forged a friendship with their new neighbors, Danny (Sam Heughan) and Becka (Jessica De Gow) after moving into the area. However, none of them were expecting their lives to be turned upside down after their lives became sexually entangled after a weekend getaway!

The series' fourth episode was full of twists and turns. As well as dealing with the fallout from their encounter on their spa trip in episode 3, more secrets started to come to the forefront. Becka stumbled upon Danny's secret family situation, and Jean started to turn the tables on Alan over his obsession with their neighbor.

Episode One
Life feels perfect for schoolteacher Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) and her spouse Pete (Alfred Enoch). They’re moving into a beautiful new residence, have a baby on the way and their new neighbours, the glamorous Becka (Jessica De Gouw) and Danny (Sam Heughan) look set to become instant friends.

But when tragedy strikes, the couple find themselves blindsided by grief. Evie lashes out at her religious family, rejects her old life but embraces her new friends, especially Danny, who she finds herself increasingly attracted to. Realising this, Pete can’t help but worry about what might have just been unleashed, especially when he discovers that Danny and Becka hold a very open relationship.

During a day trip to the coast, the chemistry between Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) and Danny (Sam Heughan) is electric, amusing Becka (Jessica De Gouw) and horrifying Pete (Alfred Enoch). Evie can’t get the tantalising idea of couple swapping out of her head.
