  • Nick Kyrgios pulled out of an exhibition match with Novak Djokovic, having picked up an abdominal injury days before the Australian Open.

Nick Kyrgios has cast doubt on whether he will appear in the Australian Open, having suffered a new injury.

The Australian had been due to play in an exhibition match alongside Novak Djokovic on Thursday, but pulled out due to an abdominal injury.

Kyrgios reached the Wimbledon final in 2022 and made his return to action at the Brisbane International last week, having played only one singles match since undergoing knee and wrist surgery in October 2022.

The 29-year-old announced his withdrawal from the exhibition match on his Instagram page, posting that he would be "resting and doing everything I can to be OK by the AusOpen” ahead of it starting on Sunday.

The news will be a worry to those in the Kyrgios camp following his first-round defeat to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard at the Brisbane International, which left him "throbbing in pain".

He also suggested that he was 'feeling like he had been hit by a bus' following a doubles outing alongside Djokovic in the same tournament.

Kyrgios returned to singles action after a long injury lay-off at the Brisbane International, where he went down to rising French star Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

The towering Mpetshi Perricard served 36 aces on his way to a 7-6 (7/2), 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/3) win over the talented but temperamental Kyrgios in two and a half hours.

Kyrgios, who had wrist reconstruction in his time away from the game, conceded after the loss that he was in pain but he was in an upbeat mood.

“For me, honestly, it was a great match, considering I hadn’t played in 18 months,” Kyrgios, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist, said. “And to put myself in a winning position was exciting.” The 29-year-old said he “felt relatively pretty good physically

Nick Kyrgios falls to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in Brisbane International three-set thriller

Nick Kyrgios says he has to accept he will play in pain for the rest of his career following his gallant three-set defeat to Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard at the Brisbane International.

Kyrgios lost 7-6 (7/2), 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/3) in a two-and-a-half hour epic that left both players drained.

It was that two-hour-thirty-minute ordeal on Pat Rafter Arena that led Kyrgios to say it would take "a miracle" for his wrist to hold up in a grand slam, starting with the Australian Open in a fortnight.

However, Kyrgios, playing his first singles match since July 2023, was left the sorer thanks to the experimental surgery on his wrist that helped save his career.

"I've got six holes in my hand, and one in my arm," Kyrgios said.

"Not one tennis player has ever had this surgery and come back and tried to play again.

"It's all really an experimental kind of situation. The surgeon said, 'If you ever go back and play at this level again, it's on you guys. I don't really have any protocol of how it's
going to be or how it's go nick kyrgios returns to action in brisbane next week.

Djokovic beat Kyrgios in the 2022 Wimbledon final and the pair have developed a close friendship since then.

"I want to thank Nick for playing. He said the other day it should be a pleasure to play with him and it is!

"I'm glad to share the court with him on his comeback. I haven't played many doubles matches, so whatever Nick was saying I was following."

Nick Kyrgios will make his long-awaited return to ATP Tour action next month at the Brisbane International presented by Evie, to be held from 29 December to 5 January 2025.

Kyrgios, the former No. 13 in the PIF ATP Rankings, has fond memories of playing at the ATP 250 in Brisbane. In 2018, on his main-draw debut at the event, Kyrgios swept through the field to clinch his fourth tour-level title.

Now, after a gruelling injury hiatus, the seven-time ATP Tour titlist and Wimbledon finalist will return to Brisbane with his sights set on reigniting the form that propelled him to stardom earlier in his career.
