DENIED ACCESS: Don Bentley to Finish Vince Flynn’s Prequel Trilogy with New Book this Fall
Get ready for explosive action as Vince Flynn’s iconic hero Mitch Rapp returns in Denied Access, the riveting conclusion to the prequel trilogy that began with American Assassin and continued with Kill Shot.
Rapp, one of the biggest names and most beloved heroes the thriller genre has ever produced, first appeared in #1 New York Times bestselling author Vince Flynn’s second novel, Transfer of Power, back in 1999. After twelve consecutive bestsellers, Flynn, in his 2010 novel American Assassin, went back in time to show Rapp’s origin story with the CIA, launching what he called a new “prequel trilogy” within his series. The next year, Flynn followed up with Kill Shot, which follows a young Mitch Rapp on the run after being set up and shot, forced to survive on his own as the very people who trained him attempt to track him down and kill him. Tragically, Flynn, who passed away in 2013 after a battle with cancer, was never able to complete the prequel trilogy arc, leaving many fans to wonder what, exactly, happened between Kill Sh On September 3, 2024, Mitch Rapp is back for another hard-hitting adventure in Capture Or Kill, the first series entry from New York Times bestselling author Don Bentley. Bentley—previously announced as the successor to Kyle Mills, who famously took over Vince Flynn’s #1 New York Times bestselling series a decade ago before contributing nine titles to the franchises, including last year’s Code Red—is the author of multiple books in several series including the Matt Drake novels and the Tom Clancy Jack Ryan Jr. series. Now, he slides into one of the most coveted rolls in all of publishing as the voice behind Rapp, the American assassin, and all eyes are on him as prepares to release his first offering, which will be the twenty-third in the series. However, in a twist, Bentley’s book will not slot into the current timeline of events, meaning it won’t follow Mills’ Code Red and be set in today’s world. Instead, Capture Or Kill will take place between Flynn’s Pursuit Of Honor (2009) and The Last Man (2012), the “There was a saying in the spy business that information was only as good as its source.” ~Vince Flynn, Memorial Day “The average human’s mind was a tidal wave of contradictory emotions unbounded by intellect or calculation. Love, hate, fear, greed, lust—all fighting for dominance, advancing and retreating, controlling and justifying every action and reaction.” ~Kyle Mills, Oath of Loyalty If you’re big on reading spy/counter espionage thrillers, you would have definitely come across the name Mitch Rapp, considered to be one of the greatest characters written in the genre by Vince Flynn. This series had popped up on my radar, thanks to TheRealBookSpy, when I resumed my voracious reading habit in 2015 and thrillers were the bread and butter of my annual reading list. I also knew my brother had read nearly all his books published in the 2000s (see picture on left), mostly because our favourite bookseller at Midlands Bookshop in New Delhi had gotten him hooked to them. Even as I was doing the 2022 #AquaFlavoursBingeReads of the Scot Harvath series by Brad Thor, I was already leaning on the idea of picking up Mitch As 2024 approaches, I’ve been contemplating my last days in the company of Mitch Rapp. After a decade at the helm of the series, it’s hard to believe. Not only that I’ve spent a third of my career with Mitch and the gang, but that my time with them is nearly over. Hopefully not with readers, though. It’s been incredible getting to know so many of you—some personally, others through social media, and still others from comments, critiques, and emails. I hope you’ll come along with me as I write and release my next book featuring Fade—the protagonist of my new series. A lot of people have asked me how I feel about leaving the series and the answer is that I’m not entirely sure. Quitting the best job in the world was a hard thing to do but as I embark on a new project, I realize that it was right for both me and for Mitch. It was time for someone else—in this case the amazing Don Bentley—to provide a fresh perspective and move the narrative in new directions.
