When you’re designing a custom home, every decision—from the layout to the finishes—reflects your style and lifestyle needs. It’s an exciting process. However, one often overlooked, or rather a last-minute thought, is where to put your garage.

While there are different garage placements, one style looks perfect for every home—the detached garage. It’s no secret that we love detached garages for their flexibility, security, and aesthetic value, and in this blog post, we’ll show you a few of our favorite detached garage designs.

Why Choose a Detached Garage?

A detached garage offers far more than a place to park your car. Whether you’re working with a sprawling estate or a smaller lot, detached garages offer versatility and can enhance the overall design of your property.

Here are some key benefits:

With A detached garage, you have the freedom to position it wherever it best suits your property. What do you mean by "match the house" - the similar kind and color of siding? The same color roof? The same color trim?
What era are the houses in your neighborhood from? Are the houses distinctive styles?

Garages (in my area) tend to be "boxes" with a gabled or a hipped roof.

I live in an urban area with houses going back to the 1920's with the last houses built in the mid 50's.
My late 1940's "custom" brick residence has a one car brick garage that was built at the same time as my house but has no embellishments.
My little "Bomb Shelter" garage has the same roofing material in the same color as my house. I also painted the gutters and trim the same color as my house's. It was a great way to use up paint I already had.

Most of the other "custom" brick houses hold matching brick 2 car garages (if the house is a yellow brick Chicago Style Bungalow - it's got a yellow brick garage. ) The brick georgians and queen annes and tudors have matching garages - the roof lines and any decorative brick work around the garage windows and service door -- mirror the decorative brick on the house.

On a unique note - there's a Sears house (brick) down the block that is painted alabaster with a b

We can all benefit from a little more space at home, right? New storage or living space isn’t always easy to find. Many of our clients choose to add a garage to solve their spatial issues. The biggest question they have in the planning phase is whether to build an attached garage or a detached garage.

What Is an Attached Garage?

An attached garage is typically located adjacent to a home and shares at least one wall with the living space. It’s commonly used for vehicle storage but can also serve as a workspace or storage area.

Having an attached garage connected to your house allows for easy and convenient access to the dwelling, particularly during inclement weather. However, it may also result in increased noise transfer from the garage to the living space and limits design flexibility compared to a detached garage.

What Is a Detached Garage?

A detached garage is a stand-alone structure, often used for vehicle storage or as a workshop. As the name suggests, this type of garage is detached from the house, but it’s typically located within the property boundary and can be built in various sizes and styles to suit your needs.

First things first, let’s start with an explanation of what a detached garage is before we get into detached garage ideas. So, what is a detached garage? It’s a standalone building or structure that is separated from the main house. This structure is normally used to store vehicles, tools, or other equipment. Other people might utilize this space for work areas such as mechanic shops, art studios, woodworking, or other hobbies. A detached garage is functional, and offers more design flexibility, unlike an attached garage.

These structures come in various styles and designs to fit personal preferences and needs and we will talk more about these detached garage ideas as we go through them. Detached garages offer the potential for converting the space into livable spaces such as a home office, workout rooms, and guest rooms. Detached garages can be built using either brick, wood, or concrete, depending on the local codes and the owner’s preference.
